The Refugee School Impact Program (RSIP) is a partnership between Journey’s End Refugee Services and the Bu"alo Public Schools Multilingual Department and the Buffalo Public Schools Refugee Immigrant Student Welcome Program. The partnership aims to support children and families within the district in adjusting to the local school system and achieving their academic goals. These goals are primarily attained through the role that the Academic Coaches play as a bridge between parents and schools.

Job Description:

The Academic Coach serves as a liaison between the Buffalo Public Schools and refugee and immigrant families. The coaches are responsible for cultural orientation, classroom academic support, parent informational sessions, school orientation, native language support, and other community outreach efforts. The position’s schedule primarily follows school hours; however, some weekend and evening hours are required for parent training, crisis management or family orientations.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assist refugee and immigrant students by providing native language support (including sight translating documents and interpreting) in Buffalo Public School classrooms.
• Serve as the bridge between refugee and immigrant families and the schools providing a wide range of support services to reduce barriers to educational success - including facilitating enrollment, individual or group orientation, problem solving, crisis management, immunization verifcation, transportation, access to remote schooling, advocacy, homework assistance, and more.
• Assist with emergency situations and conduct home visits with school social workers.
• Assist in planning, recruitment, and implementation of mini-academies, summer school, student and parent orientations, and summer camp programs.
• Interpret for parent meetings, parent/teacher conferences, trainings, school orientations, open houses, parent nights, and communicating notifications through phone alert system.
• Interpret and provide support to District Committees in regard to parent concerns.
• Help parents understand the purpose and availability of educational services.
• Help parents with school registration and provide guidance in school selection process, special school applications, and the school transfer process
• Document all services provided in case files and ensure student program enrollment paperwork is collected.
• Other duties as assigned

• Must be fluent and literate in English as well as Rohingya
• Experience working with the refugee population or in a diverse classroom environment.

Job Description

The full time ESOL Teacher provides high-quality instruction within an adult education program, serving adult English language learners across multiple proficiency levels. This position includes afternoon instruction in Lackawanna for a beginner-intermediate ESOL literacy class four days a week with the potential to teach remotely, focusing on foundational English language skills and literacy development. In the evenings, the instructor will lead an in-person class focused on high intermediate-advanced ESOL GED preparation two days a week, integrating English language instruction with history, science, and math concepts aligned with GED standards.

Job Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging evening ESOL/GED preparation lessons for high intermediate-advanced adult English language learners.
• Integrate English instruction with GED-related content, including history, science, and math.
• Adapt instruction to meet diverse language proficiency levels and learning needs
• Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback.
• Maintain accurate attendance, assessments, and instructional records.
• Foster an inclusive, respectful, and encouraging classroom environment.

Qualifications

• Reliable transportation required.
• Master’s or Bachelor’s degree with two years’ experience.
• Valid New York State Teacher certification preferred.
• TABE Test and BEST Plus Administrator preferred.
• Demonstrated experience teaching ESOL and GED preparation, both in person and remotely, preferably in adult education setting.
• Ability to work effectively with adult learners from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

The Program Specialist (Education) provides both administrative and direct service support to adult English language learners enrolled in Journey’s End Education Department programs. This role is responsible for connecting students to internal and external resources that address individual needs – such as vocational training, apprenticeships, public benefits, and health services, while helping to establish realistic educational and career expectations.

The Program Specialist supports the coordination of departmental activities including orientations, student intakes, assessments, field trips, and workshops, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants. This position serves multiple sites with primary responsibilities based in Lackawanna. This role requires regular travel between Lackawanna and Buffalo,  approximately twice per week based on department needs. The position also requires occasional evening hours, which may be flexed as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Serve as a point of contact and resource for student support and refer participants to appropriate services, following up to ensure connection.
• Connect students to community-based resources, including workforce training, healthcare, and public services.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in accordance with grant requirements.
• Conduct weekly student intakes and enrollment.
• Administer and maintain certification for BEST Plus 3.0 and
• TABE assessments
• Monitor GED Manager account to track community interest; support advanced students in registering for GED exams.
• Organize seasonal educational field trips, student workshops, and guest presentations.
• Assist instructors with classroom support and logistics as needed.
• Maintain an organized and welcoming office environment
• Participate in on-going professional development, as required by program funding
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Social Work, or degree in a similar field, or at least one year of experience working in a social services field providing direct service
• Highly organized and able to work in a fast-paced environment
• Strong written and oral communication skills, and an acute attention to detail
• High proficiency in Microsoft Suite products, including Excel
• Ability to be part of a dynamic team of talented and dedicated individuals while maintaining independence and ability to self-direct
• Valid driver's license and access to an insured vehicle
• Experience working with foreign-born and/or diverse populations
• TABE administrator certification preferred – training provided upon hire.

The Interpreting and Translation Department at Journey’s End offers high-quality, in-person interpretation and document translation services in over 45 languages needed to do business in a global society. These services are ideal for hospitals and medical service providers, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, attorneys and real estate agents, government entities and anyone else seeking to provide services to Limited English Proficient individuals

We coordinate with partner organizations and service providers to run monthly trainings for our 60+ per-diem interpreters, provide free “best practices for working with an interpreter” trainings for our diverse customer base, and attend events and networking opportunities with the aim of promoting our services, expanding the network of providers we work with, and recruiting new interpreting candidates.

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Journey’s End Interpreters—Perform oral (spoken) communication of a message from one language to another through consecutive interpretation. Interpreters provide spoken language assistance for various agencies and customers in the community as representatives of Journey’s End Refugee Services. Interpreters may also be asked to perform Sight Translation—The oral (spoken) communication of a written text into another language (reading aloud). Interpretation appointments may be in-person, telephonic, or video remote, and typically occur on weekdays during normal business hours. 

Journey’s End Translators— Perform written communication of a message from one language to another language. Document translation projects may include birth/marriage certificates, IDs, flyers, surveys, report cards, handbooks, legal and medical documents, and more. Translators must demonstrate superior knowledge of grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation in both English and at least one other language. Translators may complete all document translation projects remotely, but must submit translated product by the agreed upon deadline. 

Applicants may choose to be an interpreter, translator, or both. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Interpreters: Perform in-person, telephonic, and/or video remote consecutive interpretation for service providers and their clients in a professional setting.
• Interpreters: Perform sight translation for service providers and their clients in a professional setting. 
• Translators: Perform document translation services by translating text from source language to target language without adding, omitting, or distorting source content. 
• Abide by Journey’s End confidentiality policy and HIPAA Privacy regulations, which protect spoken, written, and electronic “individually identifiable health information”. 
• Adhere to the principles of the Journey’s End Interpreter Code of Ethics including high standards of professionalism, impartiality, and confidentiality.
• Arrive on time to all appointments and complete all document translation projects by the agreed upon deadline. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Fluency/near-fluency in English and at least one other language.
• Advanced knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation in English and the target language(s).
• Excellent verbal and written language skills in both English and at least one other language.
• Ability to deliver interpretation in a highly accurate and complete manner.
• Basic computer skills in email communication, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.  
• Highly organized, punctual, professional, and reliable: able to keep track of scheduled appointments, follow-through on all job duties, and communicate effectively and courteously with supervisor and customer.
